Diabetic Eye Disease

Diabetic Retinopathy is an eye-disease which affects more that 16 million Americans.

 with Dr. Felipe De Alba

In Illinois, almost 500,000 residents age 18 and older have been diagnosed with diabetes, which is almost 6% of our State population.  Another important fact is that an additional 3 million people in Illinois are at increased risk of being undiagnosed (becuse of risk factors including age, obesity and sedentary lifestyle.)

The most common eye problem associated with diabetes is diabetic retinopathy.  Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness among adults.  In Illinois, there are an estimated 752 new cases of blindness every year due to diabetes.

Dr. Filipe de Albe is Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology in the Department of Ophthalmology at Loyola University Medical Center.  He is a retinal and vitreous specialist and is Director of the Retinal Service at Loyola University Medical Center.
