ISPB ON CAN-TV (Cable Channel 21)Through membership in the Chicago Access Network Television (CAN-TV) — Cable Channel 21 — the ISPB is using a new avenue to inform friends about various eye diseases, eye safety and many low vision issues. Hotline 21 is a 25-minute live call-in show during which the ISPB is made accessible to the public. The ISPB shows (including Jim McKechnie as moderator and a featured guest) were scheduled each Wednesday, January 3 through March 28, 2001, from 5:00 p.m. to 5:25 p.m. Topics covered were: Glaucoma with Dr. David Palmer; Contact Lenses with Dr. Jan Jurkus; Cataract with Dr. Walter Jay; Low Vision with Dr. Tracy Williams; Macular Degeneration with Dr. Charles Vygantas; Diabetic Eye Disease with Dr. Felipe de Alba; Fireworks with Chief Dan Georgevich; LASIK with Dr. Jonathan Rubenstein; and AMD-Treatment with Dr. Carol Menner. Future considerations include research, pediatrics, eye exams, the aging eye, video display terminals, blepharitis, retinal detachment. Another series is planned. CAN-TV, reaching 385,000 cable households, is an independent nonprofit organization established in 1983 to give Chicagoans a voice.
